Sugarloaf. In some areas along the trail
you could get a view of some of the surounding regions but....they were just a
glimpse. Once on top, since its mostly wooded I would stand on my tippy toes,
straining my neck so I could get a see something. The best views were from
South Crocker, you could see the Sugarloaf summit and a little below but thats
about it.
From
Me. 27 follow the highway 2.6 miles
past the Sugarloaf entrance. There is a parking area to the left of the highway
marked with a Appalachian Trail marker. The trail leaves the south of the
highway and ascends steadily for about 1.5 miles. A spruce forrest starts at
about 1 mile continuing for another mile. You will then cut through birches as
it makes its way on the western side of the ridge. Then reentering the conifers
at about 3.5 miles passing a small stream. From there the trail ascends steeply
to the North Crocker summit at 5.2 miles. The trail then leads to South Crocker
descending deeply into the col and soon climbs to the summit of South Crocker.
To reach the summit take the blue blazed trail to the right where the
Appalachian Trail turns to the left for the descent into the Caribou Valley.
